I can dig it.
She didn’t blackmail her way into the position. She showed up in the cave and took the position.
And was accepted.
Much like a certain other Robin.
(well, Tim wasn’t immediately okay’d, but he was persistent about the position being filled)
Hell, Tim doesn’t even get any training before he throws his ass at Two-Face.
You could argue that “being rash” is just a Robin trait. They all do it, a lot.
Many Robin’s get fired/quit/die and (sometimes) come back. It’s like…every other day. It’s a fallback plot point. Dick was kicked out for spending too much time with the Titans, not listening to orders, getting shot by the Joker, being beaten by Two-face (take your pick). Jason was benched for “being too emotional about his parents”. Tim quits for 5 minutes in Robin 120 because he’s tired of Bruce’s head games. Even Cassandra was kicked out for a while because she was “disobedient”. Damian hasn’t been booted from the nest by Bruce yet but give him time, he’s still young. He’s walked out twice on his own, though (once on Dick and once on Bruce).
Ultimately, Bruce is a paranoid control freak who shoves people away the second he fears that he can’t control them. (To protect them or to protect himself). He plays head games that really mess with those who work for him.
Steph as Robin was never given a chance by Bruce or by the DC editorial staff. She was fridged in War Games to give Tim some angst fodder.
Steph as Spoiler later and Steph as Batgirl IS given a fighting chance, and she kicks major ass. Bruce even acknowledges it. Damian even gives her kudos.
I feel like the people who hate on Steph have literally NO idea who she is or what she stands for. Yeah, she’s not super-athletic like Dick, or super-smart like Tim, or a super-assassin like Cass or Damian, but she’s a hero. Everyone tells her no, and she keeps on doing what she thinks is right. She keeps on pushing, even when everything and everyone is against her. So, what is Steph? Steph is an example. Because none of us are super-smart, or super-athletic, or super-assassin’s (at least not like the bat family), but we all can fight for what we believe in, even when everyone and everything tells us to stop. Because if one person is still fighting, then there’s still hope.
She’s a symbol…she’s that part of human nature that fights for what’s right, even though it’s sometimes irrational. She’s hope. She’s a hero.
